Biography

Rick Cary lives and works in Asheville, North Carolina, engaged in a career that has balanced teaching, scholarship, and art production. In response to recent critical notice and new stylistic interests, he is expanding his work as an artist. He works in multiple mediums including ceramics, fine art photograhy and documentary photography. Cary produces photographic art for regional and nationally juried exhibitions, recently winning awards in shows at the 24th Annual North Carolina Photography exhibition and Tallahassee’s 621 Gallery in and the Lexington Museum of Art. His work was included in the 2002 Southeastern Photography Invitational Exhibition at the Blue Spiral 1 Gallery in Asheville, North Carolina.  He is represented by the Bella Vista Gallery.



Rick Cary serves as Dean of Fine Arts and Professor of Art at Mars Hill College, near Asheville, NC. He has published on topics related to art, aesthetics, critical theory, and art education. His most recent books are Critical Art Pedagogy: Foundations for Postmodern Art Education (1998, Garland) and the entry on art in The Encyclopedia of Critical Theory and Critical Thinking. Weil, D. (Ed.) New York: Oryx. (In press.) He co-authored Measured Lies, the winner of the 1998 Book of the Year Award from the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Human Rights. He holds graduate studio art degrees in photography and ceramics and the Ph.D. in aesthetics and the psychology of art. He has also studied at Stanford University and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
